Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Think Wellness for DBT is primarily focused on providing therapy to young adults and teens between the ages of 16 years and older.

Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT) was initially developed by Marsha Linehan in the early 1900’s to help clients that were suicidal or intentionally self-injuring. However, it has been shown to be effective with other impulse control disorders.

One of the key assumptions of DBT is that while we may not have caused all of our problems, we are the only ones capable and responsible for fixing them. This requires a continual willingness on the part of DBT participants to put in the hard work necessary for making the changes they want in order to create lives worth living.

What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)?

Embrace the journey of personal growth and transformation.

Who can benefit from DBT?

DBT has gained popularity in treating clients who have challenges with:

  • A tendency towards impulsivity and self-destructive behaviors

  • An unstable sense of self, including chronic feelings of emptiness

  • High emotional reactivity requiring a long time to calm down

  • A tendency to see others and the world in black and white terms

  • Extremely sensitive and lashing out in anger over the slightest miscue

  • Unstable relationships, especially those involving intimacy

Skills Modules Taught in DBT

01 Core Mindfulness

Being present and non-judgemental in the moment

02 Distress Tolerance

Managing difficult feelings without acting impulsively

03 Emotion Regulation

Learning to skillfully use or change emotions

04 Interpersonal Effectiveness

Relating skillfully with others

We teach practical, hands on skills in a safe space.

We know that counseling needs to be a conversation, extending and sharing insight together. At Think Wellness, we understand that things happen unexpectedly, and we want to prepare you to manage those events successfully, in that very moment. When people are emotionally engaged and able to respond effectively with the tools they learn in sessions, they walk away with their heads held higher. Our goal is to increase your confidence by building your skills. We know that you have good ideas, know yourself best, and want to get better!

We need to hear your side to help.

We meet weekly to consult and support each other in order to be effective in the work we do.
